  17. from a small, reportedly cancerous growth in his abdomen; in
  18. Boston. Tsongas left the Senate in 1984 to undergo cancer
  19. treatment but entered the presidential race in 1991 after his
  20. health stabilized. He and his doctors had asserted that his
  21. illness was in full remission.
